Things are not as easy as they seem and every new opportunity presents its set of challenges. Despite being used to criticism, Betsy DeVos is learning how to cope with the pressure of being the secretary of education of the United States. Other than this role, Betsy DeVos can be referred to as an activist, politician, philanthropist and businesswoman. As a philanthropist, she is the face beside the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. She established this foundation many years ago to engage on the issue of changing the American Education. Among the things that she is actively engaged to when it comes to changing the American Education include charter schools, school voucher programs as well as school choice.

With the Republican Party, she is not only a donor, but she has served in different capacities. For instance, in the year 1992 to 1997, she served as the national committeewoman for the Republican Party. Also, she has served under the capacity of Michigan Republican Party chairwoman for a period of five years. She served from 1996 to 2000. As a woman who supports education in the US, she serves on different boards such as Acton Institute Board, Alliance for School Choice Board as well as Foundation for Excellence in Education Board. At the moment, Betsy DeVos is married to Dick DeVos, and the two are very concerned about philanthropy focusing on education. She comes from a prominent family with a history of donations. For instance, her brother is the founder of Blackwater USA while her father is known as the co-founder of Prince Corporation. She hails from one of the richest families in the US as her family is worth $5.6 billion.

Some of the institutions that have benefited from her donations are Holland Christian School and Calvin College. These are also the schools that she attended as a young woman. Betsy Devos was brought up in a Christian environment, and this perhaps explains her giving nature. She has been involved with the Holland Foundation as the vice president for a long period. She launched the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation 28 years ago. This is an institution that is based on faith and focuses on developing better leaders of tomorrow. Among the five areas that the institution focuses on include leadership, justice and arts. It also focuses on community development as well as education. It’s estimated that she has spent approximately $139 million of these causes since the establishment of this foundation. Most of these donations were made between 1994 and 2014. Among the institutions that have received these funds include Center for Individual Rights, Michigan Pregnancy Resource Center as well as Institute for Justice and Baptists for Life.
