Joe Arpaio may have served as the Sheriff of Maricopa County for the past several years, but there is no denying all the crimes that he committed. During his tenure, he was known for inflicting a number of injustices, particularly onto the people belonging to the Latin American community living in the United States.
He was a self-proclaimed ‘righteous man’ who believed that people belonging to other races were inferior and didn’t belong in America. During his time serving in his position, he was known to have caused harm and devastation to the lives of thousands of people, all under his warped guide of ‘patriotism’.
In spite of his crimes being known to the people, he went on to continue in his position for twenty-five years, before he was finally convicted in October last year.
However, just a month after he was sentenced, he was granted the much controversial Presidential Pardon, which is granted by the President of the United States to one convicted criminal whose actions could be seen in a positive light. Read more: Jim Larkin | Angel.co and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn
The shocking pardon that was granted to Arpaio sparked nationwide outrage, and protests emerged all over the country, asking for the pardon to be revoked and so that Arpaio can actually receive his punishment for the crimes that he committed.
The outrage sparked by the public and various organizations was the reason Arpaio was sentenced in the first place. Even though his actions were prevalent for a long time, it was only recently, after the effort of organizations like the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund that people had the courage to come forward in protest against Arpaio.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was first established when its founding members, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were inflicted with false imprisonment at the hands of Arpaio.
They knew that because of his connections, one person alone could not bring such a force down, which is why they decided to bring together the people who had experienced this kind of injustice with the hope of convicting Arpaio for his actions. The efforts of these organizations had proven to be fruitful when the October 2017 verdict was given, but the pardon being granted to Arpaio is turning back all the efforts that countless people have put in the values that the country stands for, and the people’s faith in the justice system itself.
The pardon has sent a message to people all over the country that the government is not in their favor, and that the person who is more well connected and affluent always wins.
It is an established fact that Trump and Arpaio share a connection with each other and have known one another for several years. They also share the same viewpoints on people belonging to different races, which is something that is now worrying a majority of the people in America.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund plans to continue efforts to one day see a country where criminals are convicted for their actions and were those who were victims to discrimination at the hands of Arpaio can seek justice.
